I think that with time, applications will make it easier to take action (e.g. make donations) directly on social media channels, and that will make these tools much more effective at changing actual behavior.
What I think is that activism on social media right now is more of a "top of mind" form of advertising. It isn't going to get a lot of people to do much of anything, but there are some smaller causes (for example the movie Gasland) that I wouldn't think of at all if it wasn't for an impulse "like" on Facebook after finding out about them.
